DCA: Fabrication 2

Here are some shots of another day of fabricating some of the major components. First is the main vertical component of the base which is a ~20″ tapering piece of 5/16″ plate, cut to a taper and then bent about 90° of a ~24″ radius. First the taper is laid out:

Then it’s cut and ground and a jig is made at the proper angle and radius. The jig will be used to guide the cut plate as it’s bent to ensure the angle and radius are correct. In the next photo you can see the cut piece resting on the jig. Each section, marked off in white will be heated and bent (with the bar attached) along the jig. After each section is bent along the jig it’s tack welded in place to prevent buckling.

Next you can see the piece when it’s fully bent along the jig.

When it’s cool it’s then broken off the jig and then ground to precision and can be seen here with the hub flanges.

The 2″ hub flanges were first laid out and then then a 9/16″ center hole was drilled in. Although the center punches are really precise the final holes are each off by ~1/64″, which, though small, is visible (even in these photos) and kinda’ bothers me. But I suppose that is what I get for drilling in the dark at NIMBY on a jankey press. If I get the time I’ll remake them.

Oh and here are the six side bands for the two bowls.
