“Bloom” Sketch 1

I’ve started doing some design work on two new sculptures. Here is a CAD sketch of the first one which, for now, I’m calling “Bloom”.

It’s a kinetic piece ~20″ high and ~12″ wide that is inspired by a blooming bud.

The core idea is for there to be a disc that can be turned and is the core of a complex cam that acts upon several parts of “bud” at different times resulting in a temporally complex unfolding of the buds elements.

Here is just the most raw of CAD sketches. You can see the three primary “leaves” around a sphere and one of these leaves has a additional component (removed from the others for simplicity) with a slot that is mechanical coupled to a rod which its self is connected to the cam on the disc below.

You can see how as the cam plate turns it changes the location of the rod which then displaces the leaf.

Again, this is just a sketch where I was more focused on establishing the physical relationships needed for the cam to work in the model. Here the cam grove is spiral but it will really be a complex loop so that as you continue to turn the cam disc the bud continually opens and closes.
