The Inverted Machine by Ralf Baecker

The inverted machine – Rechnender Raum (Calculating Space) is a light-weight sculpture, constructed from sticks, strings and little plumbs. At the same time it is a full functional logic exact neural network.

Neural Networks, both biological and artificial, are an important concept in computation Neurosciecne and a valuable tool for understanding how  “simple” elements, like individual neurons, can be wired together to solve incredibly complex problems.

Neural networks can learn to solve problems by adjusting the “weight,” that is the importance, of various inputs at different times.

I love the way this piece instantiates this concept with charming little plumb weights.
