This is the first sketch I ever did of the piece. You can see that most of the final elements are in the original sketch: multiple apertures, extended blades and false scales. You can also see some of the first ideas for names in the upper right corner.
The second sketch is even closer to the final piece. These two original designs had chains and sprockets that actuated the apertures. I still love this idea but I never had time to implement it.
These two pages capture a touch of the initial mechanics and geometry that needed to be worked out before I even started to CAD it up. In the upper right corner of this last page you can see another round of names.
