I’m just catching up on this story about the I Am Rich app for the iPhone.
I first came across this post on Webmonkey and got some more details form the LA times.
Have you hear about this? So Armin Heinrich of Germany wrote a application for the iphone that cost $999.99.
What did it do? Nothing. It displayed an icon of a red jewel. That’s it. It’s been pointed out that you can’t even change to color of the icon. Apple subsequently yanked the app from the store but …
Apple couldn’t pull it down before curious aristocrats — eight of them — had purchased it. Six people from the United States, one from Germany and one from France dropped a grand for the gem in the first 24 hours it was available, Heinrich said.
Okay, these people are fools — rich or not. However, when I first heard about I thought this app might be considered a work of art as, for a reason I’m still not clear on, I thought of For The Love Of God, (image below) by Damien Hirst. I’m not sure if the comparison is fair — it’s just what popped into my head.
Then in the LA times write up I read this statement by Heinrch
The App is a work of Art and included a ’secret mantra’ — that’s all.
