For the past month my good friend Jamie Viada has lead a crack crew of fellow West Oakland artists, including Almost Scientific pals Ben Carpenter and Ryon Gesink, on the fist of his Art Across America projects.
Art Across America
is a nationwide art initiative that educates and creates awareness around environmental issues by bringing communities together [...]
Over the past few months my good friends and collaborators in KSW have been restoring a beautiful, steam-powered paddle boat that they are going to piolt down the Hudson river in NY as part of the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea project:.
Swimming cities of Switchback Sea is a flotilla of seven intricately hand crafted vessels [...]

God help us — even the weather channel has published an article about Stampunk. Overall the article is a rehash of the same old tropes and themes that everyone else has been printing. I’m stunned that there are people out there getting paid to rewrite the same (uninspired ) article that has been written ten [...]
Tom Sepe, who’s work was shown but not credited in the recent Design Observer post has this reply to the article:
My name is Tom Sepe and I’m the creator of the Whirlygig Emoto - (the “steampunk motorbike” that you failed to credit.) http://tomsepe.com/fabrication.html
Firstly, if you are going to make the point that steampunk is non-functional [...]
If you live in the bay area I seriously recommend you that you head down into the Mission district and check out the new super cool instillation by the Cardboard Institute of Technology called Cardburg.
They have built an incredible detailed, miniature city out of cardboard.
There is a cave you can climb in. Cardboard clothing you [...]
My buddy Ben has this great video on his blog, Backbone Metals.
The black and white film does not do this justice. Keep in
mind that the huge glowing thing they are working is around
2300 degrees F.
The best part of this film is towards the end as the crew
“team strikes” to rivet the shackle pin into [...]
The Steampunk Whorkshop has a nifty little interview with Treehouse Alum Top Sepe about his Steampunk, electric-steam hybrid motorcycle — The Whirlygig Emoto!
I had the good fortune to meet and work with Tom Sepe on the Steampunk Treehouse project and can recall him bringing the parts to the nascent Whirlygig Emoto around while we were [...]
I’m honored to be somewhat featured in this recent Nature article about Steampunk. Nature is a very high profile science journal that I largely only encounter in my life as a scientist. I think my thesis advisor will find it … let’s say … amusing that I’ve gotten a mention in Nature for [...]

BoingBoingTV was around NIMBY and the Steampunk Treehouse a few weeks ago interviewing the crews. They posted the Steampunk Treehosue video a few weeks ago and now they’ve posted the KSW one.

Hey everyone!
Over the past few weeks Cyrus Farivar, an NPR reporter, has been putting together a story on Steampunk, including the Steampunk Treehouse and KSW for NPRs All Things Considered. He stopped by the Edwardian Ball and interviewed me while I was (exhausted) and setting up the Dihemispehric Chronaether Agiatator.
Well, the story will be [...]
Aether Emporium, a steampunk website, has just posted a great interview with Sean Orlando about the Steampunk Treehouse project and KSW. Sean is one of the founders of KSW and the director of the Treehouse project.
The article features some great photos including one of the best I’ve see of the Triaparator.
