While installing the Steampunk Treehouse at Dogfish Head Brewery we stayed at the beach “resort” town of Rehboth. On one of our last nights, when most of the work was over, I went out with my lovely 50mm/1.4 and tried to capture the unique boardwalk vibe that I had been living in for [...]
I live on the most twisty street in San Francisco. No, not Lombard St … Vermont St! And of all the crazy, stupid events that happens on this street on a regular basis the best is the Bring Your Own Big Wheel race (BYOBW).
That’s right, on Easter Sunday, all the beautiful, [...]
So one of the ideas I had while building the Rocket Sam papercraft model was to build some scale models of the Raygun Gothic Rocket that everyone would be able to build.
I’m doing the first in wood, and I just got done putting together a prototype. This was laser cut out of 1/16″ plywood, it’s [...]
About a month or so ago I picked up a copy of the SF Panorama which was almost too great for words. One of the best things in it was a Rocket Sam comic by Chris Ware that, on the back, had a paper-craft model of rocket. Well, the other night I totally geeked out [...]
The West Oakland Rocketry Club is an Art Rocketry club, based out of West Oakland CA, that Almost Scientific has been part of since the first launch.
Every once in a while (usually at the prompting of Radio Robot) we gather up our hot glue guns, cardboard tubes, Estes motors, wires, pie, our custom designed Launch [...]
While we were building the Raygun Gothic Rocketship I was so busy working that I never had any time to take photos. I never felt bad about it because there were so many great photographers taking shots of it. Well today we had to display the Rocket for some very exciting secrete guests and I [...]
WORC saw fit to assemble recently, and, as is our custom, rockets were rapidly made and deployed. Some even went up.

Nick Winterhalter got this great video by attaching a camera to one of the spokes of The Lumbering Contraption at the race. I love the water bottle.
The race was fantastic. So much fun. We were not the fastest there (shocking), in fact, I don’t even remember any of our times.
We did win a lovely trophy for Best Engineering.
Number of “official” runs = 2
Number of injures = 1
Severity of injury = “minor”
Ummmmmm — why are we building a 10′ tall 10′ wide hamster wheel call the Lumbering Contraption?
(Not to pick noses, as the Internets would have you believe.)
Well, this Sunday, September 28th, 2008, is the great Handcar Regatta — a race of human-powered rail-track creations.
We have been hard [...]
Yo! Did ya’all see the New York Times piece on the “Swimming Cities” project that my steamy KSW crew is participating in?
No? Well check it out here -> A Floating City With Junkyard Roots
And that fantastic photo leading the article (also shown below) features our steam-powered paddle boat with my man Zach at [...]
It’s been pointed out to me that Goth Magazines recent post on the Steampunk Treehouse featured an Almost Scientific photo!
I believe that photo came from the Coachella install set which can be found here.
I know it’s a bit late but I finally got around to going through my photos from our recent instillation of the Steampunk Treehouse at Coachella.
I tried to document all the various stages that goes into setting it.
You can also see the spreader bar I designed and fabricated in action.
There were too many photos to [...]
The new patina on the roof of Steampuk Treehose is starting to take shape.
Our goal is to give the roof some really aged blue-green color by applying a fresh layer of paint on the rusted metal, and then systematically (and artfully) destroying that layer of paint.
Last weekend we laid down the first even layer [...]
Well Coachella is coming up really soon and the Steampunk Treehouse crew has been hard at work getting our little treehouse ready.
We’ve gotten a bulk of the basic upkeep and repair work done and can now take some time to do some cosmetic work.
One of the first things we want to do [...]
